Year 5 have been enjoying their topic of ‘Monarchy to Democracy’ and at the beginning of term wrote letters to our local MP, Robert Courts, inviting him to visit and talk to us about democracy and his role in parliament. Mr Courts visited, giving the class a fascinating ‘potted history’ lesson about how democracy evolved over the centuries and the roles of different Kings in its development. He then spent lots of time answering the children’s very perceptive questions about his job, parliament and the process of law-making. Mr Courts and his team were impressed by the children’s behaviour and thoughtful questions, and the children gained a real insight into the life of an MP.
